Video art

self-portrait

I created this video for an assignment where I had to introduce myself through video. I wanted to explore how I could represent what makes me unique without simply videoing myself. I majored in theatre production, and I was inspired by how I could merge the theatrical elements of puppetry with digital video. I used both the physical manipulation of the puppet and the editing of the video to showcase my personality and sense of fun.

I wanted to create a distinct colour palette and feel, with a clear shift between the “real” world and the fantastical puppet world. As I shot and edited the clips, both the puppet and its world came to life.

Rose-tinted relationship

This piece, Rose Tinted Relationship, was created for a public video art exhibition called What Is Community?, which ran at the Niagara Artists Centre from December 7th to 21st, 2023. For this piece, I was interested in exploring perception and memory. I wanted to represent the ways that we look back upon our time with others, how the
good and the bad blend together into a hazy fog. I took inspiration from home videos, and the vulnerability that can come with them.

Much like memories, some clips in this video are clearer than others, some feel skewed, and some overlap. The words don’t necessarily match the videos. The sounds are echoey, with white noise layered in to feel like the sound inside someone’s head. I used a variety of lighting sources, video effects and sound sources to evoke this reminiscent feeling in the audience.

This piece was intended to be played in a gallery context, on a continuous loop. This represents how rose-tinted goggles can cause people to end up in a cycle, returning to relationships because they forget why they ended.

I wanted to use this piece to focus on how we can use video art to represent something as subjective as memory, capturing feelings instead of objective truths.
